To promote your business, balance the supposedly 'free' public relations with paid advertising, says Barbara Figge Fox. "Public relations is not free. Social media is not free. Consider the cost of your time."
After retiring as senior editor, Fox is now senior correspondent at U.S. 1 Newspaper. She also does pro bono public relations and social media work for Princeton United Methodist Church, Not in Our Town Princeton, and the New Jersey State Button Society. She will offer tips on how to "earn the most ink" in the least amount of time.
"Journalists do source stories from social media," she says, "but don't discount the value of the old-fashioned press release. Somebody approved that release, and it's more likely to have all the facts straight than a Tweet or a Facebook post."
